The signature · Grand Police kayak

A wetland most visitors never see

On the wild south coast of Mahé, tucked behind Grand Police beach, lies one of the island's last great wetlands, a maze of still, glassy water and ancient mangroves. This guided kayak tour takes you into it: ninety unhurried minutes of flat-water paddling with a local guide, through a high-biodiversity reserve so quiet and green it has been called Jurassic. No experience needed, small groups only, and the only sound is your paddle.

It is the calm opposite of the open sea. The water barely moves, so beginners are comfortable within minutes, and there is time to drift, watch for birdlife in the mangrove roots, and take in a landscape that feels a world away from the beaches. Your guide knows the wetland's flora, fauna and history, and the tour finishes with a break at Grand Police beach.

We had such a great day, a 4×4 trip and then kayaking in Police Bay. Our guide was so knowledgeable and open, it really gave us an insight into the Seychelles.

The location

Where you'll paddle: the Grand Police wetlands

Grand Police sits on the remote south-east tip of Mahé, well beyond the busy beaches of the north. Behind its long, wild beach lies one of the largest coastal wetlands left on the island, a protected reserve of mangrove and fresh, still water on the edge of the Morne Seychellois range.

The mangroves are the reason it feels so alive. Their dense roots are a nursery for fish, crustaceans and molluscs, and their branches shelter birdlife you will not see on the coast. The water barely moves, which is exactly what makes it perfect for a first kayak, glassy, safe and silent.

It is a thirty to forty minute drive from Victoria and the airport along the scenic south coast, near Police Bay and Grand Anse. The tour finishes with a break on Grand Police beach, its rock pools and wide-open sand, and, in season, turtle tracks in the dunes. A hire car or a hotel pick-up (add €40) is the way in.
