The most usable beach on the island
Anse Volbert, which everybody calls Côte d'Or, is the beach you can walk to from a hotel, eat on, hire a kayak on, and get a boat from. It is over a kilometre long, the sand is fine and the water shelves very gently, so it is shallow a long way out.
It is not the most dramatic beach on Praslin and nobody claims it is. It is the one that works, which on a week's holiday matters more than a photograph.
The islets
Chauve Souris sits a couple of hundred metres offshore and St Pierre, the granite islet with the tuft of palms, is a short boat ride north. Both are why the water here stays calm and both are the reason half the boat trips on Praslin leave from this beach.
The snorkelling around St Pierre is among the best on the island and is usually sold as a half-day with Curieuse.
