Carana is a boutique hotel of about forty rooms and chalets stepped above its own cove at the northern tip of Mahé. The beach below is small and quiet enough that guests describe it as private, and the main pool sits right at the sea's edge, which is the photograph everyone takes and the reason people book.

The rooms are modern and generous, some with a private pool, and the staff have a reputation for moving people when a view falls short of what was expected, which is a small thing that tells you how the place is run. North East Point is the quiet, rocky green corner at the top of Mahé, about fifteen minutes past Beau Vallon and twenty-five from Victoria and the airport. It is residential, a run of hillside houses and small coves with clear water and good snorkelling straight off the rocks. Beau Vallon, with the dive centres, the restaurants and the Wednesday evening food market, is close enough to be an easy evening out and far enough that you do not hear it.

What a week here feels like.

Quiet, with the option of noise fifteen minutes away. Days here tend to collapse into the pool, the cove and the restaurant, and that is the intended shape. If you want to see the island you will need a car, because the bus down this coast is a long way round.

Who it suits.

Couples and small parties who want somewhere handsome and calm without a resort's scale. It suits people who like a hotel small enough to be recognised in. Families with young children should look at the cove first, because it is beautiful rather than large.

What this means for you.

North East Point is roughly forty-five minutes from the terminal, so this is not the night-of-landing hotel. Come here on the second night and take a transfer to the door. The snorkelling off the rocks below is some of the easiest on Mahé, which is worth knowing if the trip is a first time in this ocean and nobody wants to start with a boat.
