STORY, which most maps still label The H, is a contemporary beachfront resort of a hundred suites and villas on the north coast at Bel Ombre. There is a spa, a gym, an outdoor pool and a run of restaurants, and the whole thing is arranged around the beach rather than around a lobby.
It holds 4.6 from more than seventeen hundred reviews, one of the larger review bases on the island. Guests describe it as well organised and beautifully kept, and the same property works for a honeymoon and for a family without either feeling like the afterthought.
The recurring detail in the reviews is the water sports. The snorkelling and kayaking off the beach are well run and come up again and again, usually with the name of the person who ran them. That is a hotel where the staff on the sand are as good as the staff at the desk.
Where it stands.
Bel Ombre is a calm residential stretch of the north coast, just west of Beau Vallon and about twenty minutes from Victoria. It has a quieter, more local feel than its famous neighbour while keeping you a few minutes from the dive centres, the restaurants and the Wednesday evening food market. Boats for the Sainte Anne marine park leave from close by.
What a week here feels like.
An easy, sociable stay on the busiest side of the island, with a beach you can actually use. Beau Vallon is walkable-ish and a very short drive, so evenings out are simple in a way they are not on the south coast.
Who it suits.
Couples and families who want to be near things. If the plan involves diving, boat trips and eating out, the north coast is where that is easiest, and this is the best-run beachfront resort on it.

The right base if the week is built around doing things rather than lying still. The Sainte Anne boats, the dive centres and the food market are all within a few minutes, and Victoria at twenty minutes makes a half-day in town simple. Beau Vallon also has the widest choice of restaurants on the island, which is worth knowing if the party splits between vegetarians and everyone else.

Mahé is the island the international flights land on, so there is no boat and no second flight in the way. The drive from the terminal is between twenty minutes and an hour depending on the coast.
