Mango House was the private estate of a fashion designer before it was a hotel, and it still reads that way. Forty-one rooms and villas are built into a steep hillside above the bay at Anse aux Poules Bleues, most with an ocean view, and a buggy service runs at any hour because the slope is real.
It holds 4.6 from more than five hundred reviews and sits under Hilton's LXR label, which is the group's collection of one-off properties rather than a standard. There are pools, a spa and several restaurants, and the detail is consistently good from the welcome drink onward.
Service is the strongest theme in the reviews, and more than one guest calls it among the best hotel experiences they have had. That is high praise from a category of traveller who stays in a lot of hotels.
Where it stands.
Anse aux Poules Bleues is a quiet stretch of the south-west coast near Baie Lazare, about forty minutes by car from the airport and Victoria. It is one of the greener and calmer parts of the main island, hillsides and small coves, with Anse Soleil, Petite Anse and Anse Intendance all a short drive away.
What a week here feels like.
Design, and a hill. The rooms are the reason to come, and the buggies are the reason the hill does not matter. Evenings are the best part of the day here, when the light goes long across the bay and the restaurants open.
Who it suits.
Couples, honeymoons and anyone who cares what a room looks like. Grown-up rather than child-shaped, though families are perfectly welcome. If your taste runs to the understated rather than the marbled, this is your hotel on Mahé.

A honeymoon address for couples who find the big-resort version of luxury a little loud. It is also the most photogenic hotel on the island, which is not a frivolous consideration when the trip follows a wedding and there are pictures to come home with. How you arrive.
Mahé is the island the international flights land on, so there is no boat and no second flight in the way. The drive from the terminal is between twenty minutes and an hour depending on the coast.
